Septic Maintenance

We'd like to emphasize the importance of preventative maintenance to the life of a septic tank and septic lines.

A few important points to remember:
  • Know if you have a septic tank or are on city sewer!
If you are buying a new home with a septic tank find out where it's located in your yard.
  • The health department recommends pumping your septic tank every
3-5 years for a household of four.
  • Maintenance is important to both the tank and the lateral fields.
Solids can obstruct lines and erode baffles causing system failure.
DO NOT wait until your tank is experiencing one of these symptoms:
  • A foul odor coming from septic tank area
  • Gurgling sounds from the drains
  • Standing water or soggy ground near lateral field
There are several do's and don'ts for septic tanks.
  • DO NOT plant water-loving trees near your tank or lateral lines.
  • DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products!
Not only is this a problem for your tank, it may clog a line.
  • DO NOT construct anything over your septic tank.
  • DO NOT drive over the lateral field with heavy vehicles.
  • DO know what is being put in your drains. Read the labels of the products you are using including toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
  • DO conserve water
  • DO repair leaking faucets and toilets.
  • DO use bacterial additives such as Bio-Force or Robec.
  • DO maintain your system
